Abstract
This research project is about implementing peak shaving solution using a solar PV system with energy storage system for high load demand during peak hours. The prospect of meeting time-varying demand especially in a peak period is a key challenge for utility companies. The main goal of this method is to prevent usage of additional reserve capacity in the form of old power plants from the grid to supply peak variation of loads for short period of time. This method is costly and ineffective due to higher operation and maintenance cost of aging power plants. To provide an alternative energy efficient solution for peak demand problem, a solar PV system in tandem with energy storage is proposed. Integration of renewable energy in the form of Solar PV helps to promote use of cleaner energy and reduce dependency on conventional fossil fuel sources. The energy storage device in the form of battery help to store the DC energy and then feed it into grid when needed by using inverter to convert it to AC energy. This paper studies the feasibility of the proposed peak shaving method for a commercial building using MATLAB Simulink modelling.
