Abstract
The goals of a manufacturing company could be summarized to have high quality products, with substantially high productivity to ultimately generate revenue for the company. The plant layout, deemed as one of the most critical factors for the productivity and profitability of any manufacturing company has been constantly evolving since the industrial era. This evolution comes as the continuous improvement of methods, technology and industrial standards. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to design and implement a plant layout for a can making assembly area, which will generate positive improvements for the company in terms of productivity and quality. Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) and Federal Metal Printing Sdn Bhd (FMP) has entered into a collaboration for this industry based project. Currently, a factory of operations in FMP faces certain issues, namely poor space optimization, difficulty in staff to maneuver between machines especially for maintenance and high possibility to further improve production rates. FMP plans to conduct major changes within that factory to rectify the problems. This project would present the general framework and workflow on the design and implementation processes of a new plant layout within the can making industry. It will display the workflow on how of such a project is executed and how all the information is used as a basis for a proposal to the higher management of the company to implement the plant layout.
