Abstract
Transformers are an essential component of the power system. Comprehensive transformer protection is provided by a combination of protection elements. Differential protection works very well in most fault cases, but in situations where a single phase to ground fault occurs near to the grounding of the transformer, the fault impedance increases and causes differential protection to be unable to detect the fault. For this reason, the restricted earth fault (REF) relay can be used as a complement to the bias differential relay. This paper summarizes the principle of operation of a restricted earth fault (REF) relay when there is an internal fault in any turn of winding transformer and an external fault outside the protection zone.
In this thesis, the normal state of the three-phase transformer model together with the internal fault and external fault conditions are simulated using the MATLAB SIMULINK software. A 33kV / 11kV transformer is used as an example. The simulations will then include the response restricted earth fault (REF) relay to internal and external faults.
