Abstract
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. Such an environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without proper and/or adequate treatment to remove harmful chemicals and compounds. The process of water treatment is crucial process that needs to be done effectively and efficiently, in this research the water treatment was carried out using powder activated carbon as a part of a plastic water bottle filter. Filtration was conducted over four batches, where the ratio of activated carbon was varied 50g ,100g ,150g and 200g with the contact time constant at each batch, and each batch having a different contact time from the range of 10 min to 60 min. These range of conditions where used in order to study the effect of contact time and ratio on the removal parameters such as turbidity, total solid, pH and colour. All batches were carried out at room temperature of 25Co and utilized river water from the same source. The utilization of activated carbon as a filter material was found to be very effective in the reduction of turbidity, where the maximum reduction achievement was at the highest weight of 200g AC was 1.2 NTU. For total solid content, the most effective in the treatment happened at 20 min batch, the reduction percentage is 98%. The colour of treated water shows huge improvement compared to the pre-filtered water but no improvement in regards to odour.
