Abstract
In this present era, the term power quality is the foremost area of concern in the power system. The demand for a quality power supply is increasing as the use of sensitive and sophisticated connected loads at distribution feeders increasing and this issue is becoming a challenge for the utilities and consumers to avoid any damage and failure of appliances and equipment. This project only focuses on one of the severe power quality problems, namely voltage sag. The mitigation of voltage sag is achieved by introducing Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) with a Photovoltaic (PV) system. The PV-DVR is modelled and simulated in MATLAB Simulink software. The control strategy of DVR for compensating the system’s load voltage is achieved by using d-q-0 transformation and PWM switching technique. The PV system with boost converter is installed as an alternative energy storage unit of DVR. There are five case studies presented in this paper which includes a system with DC source as the supply to mitigate 30% and 60% of 0.1s voltage sag, a PV-DVR system to mitigate 30% of 0.1s voltage sag with unity PF load and lagging PF load and also to mitigate a 30% of voltage sag with duration of 1s. From the results obtained, it can be deduced that the performance of PV-DVR is effective in mitigating voltage sag.
