| dc.description.abstract | The rising of human population in the world leads to the increasing number of food being wasted annually. To counter this problem, a solution, where the food waste is being recycled and produced as a value added-product, which can help the environment by reducing them. Anaerobic digestion is one of the ways to recycle food. However, the end product of a complete stage of anaerobic digestion is methane, and although methane is a biogas, it has some drawbacks to it. Therefore, ways of utilizing food waste into value-added product, in this thesis lactic acid, are being done. This thesis presents and reports the author's effort in determining the effect of pH values, temperature and amount of inoculum on hydrolysis and acidogenesis stages of anaerobic digestion on food waste, and identifying its optimal condition. Experimental results show that the most optimal condition for the digestion of the food waste is at pH value of 7, with 125 g of volatile solid food waste and 100 g of inoculum, and is left in a pre-heated oven at 45°C for four days. The concentration of lactic acid presents in the optimal condition for the digestion of food waste is 0.0845 g/mL, which the value is very different when compared to the concentration of the lactic acid from the previous studies. This thesis shows promise in producing green acid from food waste that can be used as an intermediate substance for making other materials. | |
