Abstract
This thesis is aimed to help Malaysia engineering student to understand more on nuclear power plant's operation by using a PC-based simulator. The objectives of the project is to understand the theory and operation on Pressurized Water Reactor as well conducting certain operation using suitable PC-based simulator. From the introduction, it gives the background of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) a nuclear power plant that are commonly used worldwide and how does it function. In the literature review, the physics and theory of nuclear power plant is discussed to understand what is nuclear fission and nuclear products. Moreover, it has also discuss on types of simulator used by other universities to help their student understand operation on nuclear power plant. The methodology will be using PCTRAN also known as Personal Computer Transient Analyzer as the simulator for simulating certain operation of a nuclear power plant. The PCTRAN simulator is chosen as it is commonly used in worldwide universities and it is easy to understand and operate. This simulator will helps the students with less knowledge of nuclear power plant to understand and operate easily. In the discussion, graphs will be generated and discussed on the physics behind the operation of nuclear power plant. The operation generated using the PCTRAN simulator are normal operation with power reduction to 40%, shutdown cooling operation and loss of coolant accident (LOCA) simulation. This operations are the most common operation happen in a nuclear power plant in order to generate electricity. A comparison between a theoretical graphs and result graphs to determine the accuracy of the simulator and also the data generated.
