Yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) possesses great strength and fracture toughness when it's compared to the other monolithic ceramics. This is due to its stress induced tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation. It has transformation toughening mechanisms in its microstructure that could provide components made out of them, very excellent mechanical properties. However, these mechanical properties have been studied and it's known to have deteriorated as a result of a phase transformation taking place at low temperature ageing in moist environment at 60°C 500°C. This thesis focuses on the direct influence of varying amount of Al;O, dopant in the 3% mol Y-TZP on its mechanical properties.
