Abstract
Since the Earth condition becomes more critical over the year, energy efficiency needs to be considered as a must and not a choice. Almost one-third of the total energy consumption in Malaysia resulting from domestic sector. Therefore, reducing energy consumption in this sector is something crucial for the purposed of energy sustainability. This project aims to investigate an energy saving technique in domestic sector, known as voltage optimization. Voltage optimization is introduced in matter of unnecessary additional electrical energy consumption caused by excessively high voltage supply. Based on Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Electricity Supply Application Handbook (ESAH) steady state voltage fluctuation under normal condition for 230V supply varies from +10% to -6%. The variation of incoming supply voltage for individual houses depends on the location of the house, the load condition, and other factors. Thus, the objective of voltage optimization is to maintain the incoming voltage supply at nominal value. This project proposes two types of voltage optimizer which are transformer based and power electronic based voltage optimizer. The design for both types of voltage optimizer are included. Furthermore, this project also provides energy efficiency study by implementing the proposed voltage optimizer through an experiment. The experiment and simulation results are also presented to verify the proposed voltage optimizer in this thesis. This study proves that voltage optimization method can be used to improved energy efficiency.
