Abstract
Material usage and wastage is without doubt a major concern in cost of production in any manufacturing companies. Down gauging has been proposed by many as one of the ways that can contribute to significant savings in the material cost of aluminum cans. However, few effects towards the can's stability will need to be highlighted. In this project, the effect of down gauging of aluminum sheets used in manufacturing beverage cans will be studied. The study will be conducted in a company producing aluminum beverage cans. Crown Beverage Can Malaysia located in Bangi, Selangor. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of down gauging of the aluminum beverage can, which is to be added onto existing aluminum sheet thickness used by manufacturer with emphasis on axial load, drop resistance and internal buckle strength of aluminum beverage cans. The aluminum beverage can manufactured by Crown Beverage Can Malaysia was collected from hypermarkets around Kajang area for the experiments specimen. Then, physical testing on two difference thickness of aluminum sheets used in manufacturing beverage cans is conducted. A servo- controlled tension-internal pressure testing machine is used to investigate the deformation and fracture strength of an aluminum beverage can body. Besides that, a drop resistance test system was built to study the greatest affect on the indentation of the can. Finally, the comparison of the both thickness of aluminum sheets is studied in deep and suggestions to further down gauge the aluminum sheet thickness is proposed.
