| dc.description.abstract | This thesis reports the study of the effects of cryogenic temperature on the microstructure of the welding structure of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Samples for both type of materials are chosen with the decided dimension and welded according to the pre-planned welding techniques that is in closest simulation of the welded tankers of cryogenic liquid for a better inspection of the real world scenario. The cryogenic temperature is achieved through the use of liquid nitrogen, with the help of the Malaysian Nuclear Agency. The samples are placed in nitrogen filled Dewar for the required amount of time and then removed from the Dewar. The tempered sample then undergoes tests and the result is compared with a sample that is not tempered, kept as a controlling variable. An electron microscope is also used to view the surface of the welding of the sample. The results are then analysed and discussed establishing new findings regarding the metallurgy of metals tempered cryogenically. | |
