Underground cable is designed for a certain period of time to be operated and retain its economic value. However, certain factors will contribute to the degradation of the cable. Degraded cable will bring a high security risk to the distribution system to breakdown and affect other equipment as well. One of the ways to assess the insulation condition of the underground cable is by using polarization and depolarization current analysis. Polarisation depolarisation current (PDC) measurement method is a method used to determine the moisture content and degradation in the insulation of PILC and existence of water tree in XLPE cable. PDC measures the polarisation current when the insulation is subjected to voltage and depolarisation current, when the insulation is short circuited. Traditionally, PDC has been used to measure moisture contents and degradation in transformer insulation system. In this thesis, circuit representation has been developed to represent the underground cable. The effect of thickness and conductivity value towards the degradation of underground cable is also investigated. The measured value of the underground cable and the simulated value of underground cable is compared to get the condition of the particular underground cable. Therefore, the utility can decide whether the cable can still be operational or need to be replaced.
