The High voltage (HV) Power systems are widely used nowadays for Electrical Power transmission and distribution systems as it's considered as the main factor in the power quality and efficiency. For these system to operate efficiently, a good insulation is required in which variety of materials are used for this purpose (Solid, Liquid and gaseous materials). By nature, these materials are not perfectly pure and always contain some impurities or defects. The presence of voids (air bubbles) is one of the common impurities in solid insulation and it's undesirable because it creates a local weak zone inside the insulator in which the electrical stress inside the void will be different from the overall stress and may cause what is known nowadays by Partial Discharge (PD) activity. However, the degradation of insulation materials is not only associated with electrical stress, there is also chemical and thermal stresses effecting the insulation status. This paper studies the electric field distribution in a Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulated cable containing void-defect.. The void is represented throughout different sizes and locations and it is subjected to different applied voltages amplitudes in order to analyze the behavior of electrical field due to air void inside the insulation of a cable. The simulation has been conducted with COMSOL Multiphysics 5.0 which models and simulates the electrical filed stress in the cable and the void (Cylindrical void). The MATLAB-based SIMULINK is then used to simulate the electrical circuit model of partial discharge.
