Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are used for areas wind lower wind speeds. These kind of wind turbines are much more reliable and also relatively smaller compared to their compatriot the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT). The major difference however is the axis of rotation. Wind energy is becoming of high demand in other countries as the idea of improving carbon footprint is now embedded in every upcoming nation. The purpose of this project is to understand the potential of wind energy as an alternative source of energy in the Asian region where the country in focus would be Malaysia. A research is conducted to find out the average wind speeds in Malaysia. This was mainly done by collecting wind speed data from the Malaysian Meteorological Department. Samples from other research works were also considered in obtaining the optimal average wind speeds throughout the country. Next, a vertical axis wind turbine model and its stress coefficients were generated using Autodesk Inventor after considering factors such as power coefficient, C, and blade arc angle. The process that commenced shortly after was to generate theoretical values for the power generated. This was done by using the wind power equation. In addition to that, a flow analysis using Autodesk CFD Simulation was also carried out by creating a virtual wind tunnel around the proposed design in order to further validate the wind turbine model. It was later found that the power output of the model was in a much lower margin than its predecessor The Aeroleaf, an initiative from France. Methods to further improve the output such as The Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system and placing these wind turbines at higher altitudes to collect winds at higher speeds were also considered in this project.
