Abstract
Malaysia is a growing country in the manufacturing industry, however most of the workers that perform manual material handling still has low information about musculoskeletal disorders. This thesis is about the musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), manual material handling (lifting), and possible solutions to reduce risk of MSD among workers performing manual material handling. There are several parts of the body that are often affected by MSD such as muscle, tendon and nerve injuries. These injuries are caused by repetition in manual material handling by a worker. Lifting is one of the tasks in manual material handling. This task is often used by workers in manufacturing plants. Awkward posture and incorrect lifting technic is an example that contribute to and increase the risk of workers that are affected by this disease. Lower back pain usually affects workers that perform lifting tasks. To support this theory, survey has been conducted at selected manufacturing plants that are Hicom Automotive Manufacturing Malaysia (HAMM) and Continental PJ Malaysia to collect data. At each of these plants, 25 workers have been selected to answer the Nordic Questionnaire. The survey selection first has been made to make sure the data is suitable to achieve objectives of this project. Then the data have been tabulated in table and graph form to ease reading of the data. From the result of survey, it is proved that lower back pain is the most body part that affected by lifting task. After the cause of this disease has been addressed, solutions to overcome it had been chosen. Solutions for this project are made by referring to medical articles, medical journals and medical specialists. Main solution to this project is to increase workers awareness followed by others solution. This project is useful to the manufacturing companies to increase their workers' productivity and to protect the workers by increasing their awareness about MSD.
