dc.description.abstractCurrently, Uranium based fuel is the most common type of nuclear fuel used in nuclear reactors for the generation of electricity. Similar to power generation stations that use fossil fuels as a source of heat to boil the water to turn it to steam which in turn will generate the electricity, nuclear fuel powered reactors will substitute the fossil fuel with nuclear based fuel. Recently, research is being done to find an alternative to Uranium. The most possible alternative to uranium would be a thorium based nuclear fuel source. In this study, the behaviour of a thorium-uranium based fuel mixture will be used. The study revolves around how the neutrons in the reactor will react with the thorium-uranium fuel mixture. The milestone of this study is to see if the neutron interaction is able to achieve a stable neutron economy. In this study, several literature reviews related to this research will be reviewed and discuss to observe how it is related to the research. The study will then cover the basics of nuclear energy, nuclear fuel and alternative to the current nuclear fuel and a brief introduction to thorium. Next, the research will discuss a detailed explanation on how this experiment was conducted. The results and discussion will be discussed in the following chapter. Finally, the final conclusion to summarise the experiment conducted can be seen in the final chapter. The following pages will be the bibliography and appendix which will be attached at the end of this paper.
