Abstract
The current flow is bidirectional in modern electric networks of distributed generation units (DG), which leads to power system failures. This situation creates the variable short circuit current. According to the various penetration rate of DG supplies, the short circuit current is unpredictable. As DG units continue to grow and efficient, the coordinating of the protective relays becomes more complicated. It is important to systematically coordinate overcurrent directional relays so that faults in the protected area can be protected against and performed synchronously to prevent unwanted trips. The problem is more complicated when DG units are photovoltaic (PV) devices, since the source and the loads are variable. This report introduces case studies of varying PV system penetration levels of overcurrent directional protection using the IEEE-9 bus testing system. The relay settings are chosen to ensure data and a set of the directional overcurrent relays. For modelling and simulations of proposed operating conditions, DigSilent Power Factory software is used.
