Abstract
In the production of biodiesel, vegetable oil which is used as a biodiesel feedstock has produced long-term food supply chain rivalry as a consequence of higher biodiesel prices.The price of biodiesel is depends on the cost of the raw material used (70-95 percent) in the production of biodiesel. The use of less costly feedstocks which are not in competition for food supplies is also a better way to minimise the cost of production. This research will therefore focus on waste cooking oil ( WCO), as an alternative raw material for the development of biodiesel. However, these raw material contains abundance amount of free fatty acid content that disrupts the reaction of alkali catalysts. Thus, pretreatment of non-edible oils to minimise FFA in feedstocks for catalysed alkaline transesterification are unavoidable. Glycerolysis is one of the pretreatment processes that can turn the FFA back into its respective molecule of glycerides. There have been few records of work on reaction to glycerolysis with and without a catalyst with various non-edible oils. Research has shown that the reaction to glycerolysis reduces the Free Fatty Acid of waste cooking oil below 3%.The process of glycerolysis occurs at a high temperature and continuos by slow reaction.Response surface methodoly The study shows that the molar ratio was the most efficient FFA reduction parameter as compared with time and flow rate. Thus, a novel method has been proposed in this work that uses energy from microwaves instead of traditional heating to speed up the glycerolysis reaction with lower temperature of reaction and minimise the length of operation. The result suggested that the optimal condition was reached during conducting the experiment on molar ratio (oil to glycerol) of 1:1,microwave power of 440W which was constant throughout the experiment, flow rate of 70rpm and zero usage of catalyst.The optimum reaction time in this experiment was 10 minutes and FFA was reduced to 0.34 %. It was therefore assumed that the lowest FFA value of WCO would probably be obtained in a short time by this continuous process of glycerolysis.
