Abstract
Power generation, transmission and distribution system are all important components that a country must have nowadays in order to give power to the residential, commercial as well as industrial area to be able to develop itself. For Malaysia, these systems and equipment are all currently being manage by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). However, with the emerging of these systems, there are of course equipment which are actually in potential danger as they are exposed to the environment as well as their surroundings. In order to reduce these damages, there is a protective device called as surge arrester which can clamp the excess voltage down to manageable operating voltage. Putting the function of the device as a side note, the device itself actually faces some risks that needs to be considered towards testing of the device. To counter said risks, models for one type of the surge arrester, the Metal Oxide Surge Arrester (MOSA) were constructed. Therefore, these models are what will be explored and simulated in MATLAB Simulink to observe as well as compare each of their characteristics. In response to the simulations, hardware experiments will have also been conducted for the purpose of suggesting one model that closely resembles an actual MOSA which according to voltage impulse simulation is the Wide Range model.
