During geomagnetic storms, geomagnetic induced current (GIC) is generated on the surface of the earth. GIC passes into the earth soil to the neutral wire of the transformer and may result half-cycle saturation. Half-cycle saturation may increase the reactive power absorbance of the transformer, generating significant harmonic currents, lead to problem of voltage control and transformer heating. The literature review presents related past research and recognises the gaps left by past research that relies solely mostly on transformers and power systems related to the GIC impacts either technically or simulated. There was no research done with a renewable energy (RE) source and hybrid systems. This study investigates the GIC impacts and mitigation method on a hybrid PV power system network using the Power Systems Computer Aided Design (PSCAD) software. The network consists of a PV plant, wind farm and loads and all are connected at 0.480 kV bus bar. The GIC is modelled by using PSCAD as a regulated source of DC voltage and injected into the hybrid PV power system network via a neutral of wind turbine (WT) transformer. In this research, simulation and analysis of GIC impacts in the hybrid PV power system network were conducted. The results showed that GIC can cause transformer core saturation and increase reactive power absorption of the hybrid system. In conclusion, combining increased reactive power absorption with saturated transformer cores inserted harmonics into the network can cause voltage instability and eventual failure of power system. Further research is required to identify the specific value of GIC that makes the system unstable and to study factor that can cause damage in RE source.en_US
