Abstract
This project is generally reporting about the lubricant dripping monitoring system for the Pin-On-Disc (POD) Tribometer. The focus is on designing an automation system, which can control the direction flow of the lubricant and also controlling the speed of the peristaltic pump, using Graphical User Interface (GUI) constructed in MATLAB. The pump used in this project is the BT100-1L Peristaltic Pump. The interconnection between the computer and the peristaltic pump is by using RS232 to RS485 converter, together with RS232 to USB converter. The connection between them is first to be checked in order to proceed with the command of programming. The amount of lubricant supply is very crucial, as excess or insufficient of lubricant must be prevented. Excess of lubricant will cause the lubricant to spill out all over the POD Tribometer, while insufficient of lubricant will cause a wear track to be formed on the disc of the tribometer. The wear track form will reduce the lifespan of the tribometer, while inducing extra cost for a new replacement of the disc. MATLAB is a high-level language with a good environment for programming. It allows plotting of functions and data, while interfacing with program which is written in other language, such as C, C++ and so on. It is widely used among academic students and also researchers. Thus, for this project, MATLAB coding is trial and error in implementing the monitoring system successfully. GUI is also constructed in MATLAB, which is user-friendly, to easily control and monitor the lubricant dripping system for POD Tribometer. In conclusion, the GUI is successfully designed and constructed using MATLAB, while it can be run to monitor the lubricant dripping monitoring system for Pin-On-Disc (POD) Tribometer via computer.
