Abstract
Since coal is a solid fuel, when it burns it produces residual ash in the furnace and dirtier emissions. The residual ash usually is caught inside the furnace of the boiler hence producing slag and fouling deposits on the surfaces of water walls and superheater. This slagging and fouling formations greatly affects the performance and efficiency of the furnace. Empty fruit bunch is a by product of palm oil that can be utilised for burning in the furnace. However, the slagging and fouling deposits from the burning of empty fruit bunch (EFB) hinder the operator to utilise fuel. The co-firing of empty fruit bunch with coal may improve the slaggging and propensities of the both constituents. The samples of empty fruit bunch is blended together with coal at a specific ratio. The fuel samples were then undergoes two separate test; ashing in the muffle furnace and combustion testing in solid fuel combustion test rig.
