Abstract
This thesis presents the design and fabrication of a solar collector. The objectives of this project are to construct a solar collector that can be used for domestic purposes of a small family of three to four members, to be able to raise temperature of water from roughly 27°C to about 60°C to 70°C, to be able to hold up against local weather and to do economic analysis to compare its economical performance with the electrical water heater. The process began with doing research on the types of solar collector to select the best one that meets the expected outcome. Then, the suitable materials were selected so that the collector has high heat absorption rate of sunlight and be robust at the same time. After that, a visit to a local manufacturer of solar water heaters, SolarMate Sdn. Bhd. in Shah Alam was made to learn and observe the processes involved in fabricating a solar collector. Later, the fabrication stage took place and tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of the collector. Finally, an economic analysis was performed using the annual worth method on both the solar water heater and the electrical water heater to see which of the two would be more beneficial in the long run.
