Abstract
Dim Sum is a very common Chinese delicacy where steamed food is served to customers using a cart that has an in-built steamer system. This cart is pushed around the restaurant like a trolley, carrying steamed warm food. The idea is that the customers do not have to move around the restaurant to get their food, instead the food is going around the restaurant, basically within their reach while they are still seated at their own table. However, this service requires the use of excessive manpower to transport the food around, to ensure that no customers are left out of the rotation. On top of that, due to the relatively large size of the cart, more space in the restaurant, especially the passageway, has to be allocated for the route of the cart. As such, the productivity and efficiency of the restaurants are affected unintentionally. Therefore, the expected output of this project is to design a food conveyor system that allows restaurants to transport steamed and warm food without compromising the space and manpower efficiency. By automating the transportation of steamed food, the above-mentioned problems can be reduced or even altogether eliminated. The basics of the conveyor system is a very common device that has been around for quite some time; the Kaiten belt conveyor system in Japanese restaurants. This new design will upgrade the current conveyor system to not only operate mechanically, but also using less electrical energy, as well as incorporating a new feature that is the steaming of food.
