dc.description.abstractThe main objective of this project was to design and develop a practical and ergonomic device which is suitable and could help children develop and improve their handwriting skills. Children suffering from a disorder called dysgraphia have problems with fine motor skills and they have difficulties in handwriting. The challenges faced by children with writing difficulties were investigated and an assistive device was designed and developed to improve their handwriting skills. Research has been done on existing devices to get a rough idea on how the devices can help children improve their handwriting skills. Studies on the characteristics of the children with writing disability and how do they really write has been carried out. Every child have their own way of handwriting and all are different from each other. This project mainly focused on children having difficulties holding the pen or pencil and also on children having problem controlling the movement of their forearm. Studies on different types of handwriting techniques was also done. Besides that, analysis on the childrens forearm was done to ensure the correct dimensions of the product was suitable and ergonomic for the childs position of the forearm. A few design concepts were generated to come up with the best final design with the results from the House of Quality. The best concept design was chosen based on the pugh matrix method and the finalized design chosen based on few factors such as lightweight, able to maneuver, attachable and detachable washable material, adjustable height and length of the device for users comfort. After choosing the best concept design, refinement and modifications were done to create prototype satisfying all the factors above. Modifications were necessary to make the product a better one compared to the existing products available in the market. After the construction of the prototype, testing was conducted on children from 8 to 12 years old. The results obtained showed 50% positive outcome, 25% showed neutral outcome and the remaining 25% showed a negative outcome. It was learned that, children had to know certain basics of handwriting in order to use this product as this product was design to assist and improve their handwriting skills. Further modifications and research can be done to enhance the product which can favor to all types of writing disability in children.
