Abstract
Interconnected network of transmission and distribution lines lead to losses in the system and weakening the voltage stability in the system. Installing Flexible AC Transmission System (FACT) devices in power system has known to improve the system by minimizing the total losses and improve the voltage profile of the system. Static VAR Compensator (SVC) is one of FACT devices that most commonly used due to its lower cost. This thesis reports development of Multistage Artificial Immune System (MAIS) technique to determine optimal size of SVC. MAIS is an improvement of Artificial Immune System (AIS) technique that inspired by the biological immune system. The performance of MAIS technique is tested using 14 buses IEEE Reliability Test System. Algorithm is written in MATLAB and used to compute power flow, optimal size and location of SVC. The results are compared for both MAIS and AIS techniques according to two different objective functions; minimizing the system total losses and improving the voltage profile of the system.. The test results shows that the proposed MAIS technique has been able achieve both objective functions better than AIS technique.
