Abstract
This research project discusses the concept partial discharge measuring techniques from offline or manual to perform on-line measurements which is potentially to developed in Malaysia. Partialadischargeacanacauseasevereadamageaandadegradationaofatheaundergroundacables, particularlyatheacableajoints, which causes theadistributionaline failure which does not bridge the electrodes between an insulation system completely under high electric field stress. This thesis sets out a framework to design the ultra-high frequency (UHF) microstrip patch antenna to detect partial discharge on the underground cable. In this paper the complete discussion is focused on the working principles and the applications of microstrip patch antenna. A Microstrip antenna is well suited for wireless communication due to its low volume, conformal nature, lighter in weight, low cost of production and smaller in dimension and ease of fabrication. The microstrip antennas are more advantages and better prospects when compared with any conventional antennas. To build the prototype for this project, it includes the study on a mathematical model and the appropriate type of patch with the introduction of the MATLAB antenna toolbox and then to the CST software system. The experimental results prove that the microstrip patch sensor will serve as tools for partial discharge detection at ultra-high-frequency.
