Abstract
Recently, herbicides have been used widely in modern countries. Their massive use has resulted in their far and wide presence in environment and has led to their leaching into subsequent contamination and subsurface zones of surface and ground waters. These compounds which exposed to human and animal has caused serious toxic symptoms. Therefore, batch sorption studies are conducted to investigate the potential of Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) for the removal of herbicide 2-Naphthoxyacetic acid from aqueous solutions. Zn-AL LDH containing the organic anion of 2,4- dihydroxybenzophenone-5-sulfonate (DHBS) is synthesized by co-precipitation method. Result shows that the Zn-Al LDH produced is capable to remove up to 98% of herbicide. Physicochemical characterization such as powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) and BET analysis are also carried out in this study. Powder XRD revealed a characteristic of Zn-Al LDH structure through the XRD pattern where the solid formed is high in crystallinity which indicates the successful formation of LDH structure. The adsorption isotherms can be well described by Langmuir and Multi-Point BET surface area whereas the characteristic of Zn-Al LDH solid is determine through the classification of adsorption isotherms.
